SIP-Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project II. Lake Victoria is a shared asset of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, which jointly implemented the first phase of the project. Rwanda and Burundi are part of the upper watershed that drains into the Lake through the Kagera River, and are new members to the East African Community (EAC).         C. Fox, in International Encyclopedia of Human Geography, Twentieth-Century River Basin Development – Controlling Nature to Benefit Society. River basin development in the early and mid-twentieth century was underpinned by an unquestioned faith in the ability and right of humankind to control and alter nature for its own benefit. Development was fueled by technological . In comparison to these two development schemes, only two hundred and twenty three () and six hundred and sixty four () households will be affected during construction and operations respectively under the Run of River (RoR) Development scheme. Thus justifying the preference by partner countries for the RoR development scheme.

The Kagera River, also known as Akagera River, or Alexandra Nile, is an East African river, forming part of the upper headwaters of the Nile and carrying water from its most distant source.: The section of river named Kagera begins in Burundi, flowing out from Lake the lake, it flows east along the Rwanda-Burundi and Rwanda-Tanzania borders to a confluence with the Ruvubu River.• location: Burundi.

On the upper ranges contributing much of the river flow are its main tributaries of Nyabarongo and Ruvuvu. The river basin covers s km² and is estimated in to have a population of nearly 15 million people. Kagera Basin is under massive environmental stress Main sources of stress impacting the Kagera River Basin have been identified: • Stresses within the river Basin– e.g., untreated wastes, wath ith ddter hyacinth, unrecorded abstraction of water from the river • Stresses on littoral zones –.

Location and Extent of Kagera Basin The Kagera River basin is the upper phase II book of, and makes up 75% of the Lake Victoria basin and forms the western border between Rwanda and Tanzania. It encloses a total area of 59,km2 spread over four countries: Burundi (23%), Rwanda (34%), Tanzania (35%, 20,km2) and Uganda (8%).

BACKGROUND Lake Victoria is the world’s second largest freshwater lake and the largest in Africa, with a total catchment ofsquare kilometres, of wh km2 is the actual Lake surface. Located in the upper reaches of the Nile River Basin, the lake.

THE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development, Professor Kitila Mkumbo has assured Tanzanians of clean and safe water because there is enough money to implement various ongoing. Kagera River Basin relies entirely on Kagera River for its sustenance.

Kagera River is found in East Africa; it rises from Burundi flowing through Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania into Lake River is the principal contributor of water to Lake Victoria which in turn is a source of the White Nile River.

The Akagera river basin in particular is a rich agricultural ground that supports close to 14 million people. It runs from Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda, covering approximat square kilometres. The river Nile-Kagera has made significant contributions to the economy of most countries through which it flows.

The book presents the results of the five-year Transboundary Agro-ecosystem Management Project for the Kagera River Basin. The project starts from the idea that knowledge is a basis for sustainable development, but successful implementation depends on understanding what works in the field and where to improve lives and the environment.

The project comprises a run-of-river scheme on the Kagera River at the border between Rwanda and Tanzania and develops a head of around 35m at the local falls. A gated weir of 13m height and m long diverts a design flow of up to m3/sec into a free -low headrace tunnel - 9m wide and 12m high and around m in length.

The project objective was to establish a sustainable framework for the joint management through the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) of water resources of the Kagera river basin and prepare for sustainable development oriented investments, in order to improve the living conditions of the people and to protect the.

Sustaining multiple ecosystem service benefits in transboundary river basins is a complex and challenging task in the developing world.

This can be attributed to conflicting conservation and human development needs and exacerbated by climate change impacts, especially episodic drought and flooding events.

We use a case study from Rwanda in the Kagera River Basin in Eastern Africa .the Transformation of Agriculture in Rwanda – Phase II (PSTA II), ). In more detail, the Nyabarongo River is the main river in Rwanda that flows into the Kagera River watershed, the main affluent of Lake Victoria, which drains into the Nile River.

As a major source of water, Rwanda has prioritized national interests over regional interests.Founded.
